World Book Day

We had a busy day! We joined the Live Lesson to hear the interview with Frank Cottrell-Boyce. We sent a message to tell how much we loved Cosmic. We found out that he wrote Cosmic because he always dreamed of going into space when he was a boy.

We learnt and performed the World Book Day Rap by MC Grammar!

We enjoyed our milk and cookies while reading our favourite book together.

First Aid

As part of our PSHCE lessons, we learnt some basic first aid. We walked through a scenario of what we would do if we came across someone who was unconscious on the floor and learnt how to put them into the recovery position. We also role-played making a 999 call and discussed when we might need to dial this number.

Space Day

We had lots of fun celebrating the end of our topic with a Space Day. The children came dressed in some great costumes. We played some games to develop our teamwork and communication skills, as well as doing some coding on the iPads. We also had a go at making paper rockets which would be propelled by air blown through a straw.

We have been learning about perimeter. We placed string around the outside of a shape and cut it when it met the point at which we had started. We then gathered these pieces of string together and compared them to see which objects had the longest perimeter and which had the shortest. Our next step was to use a ruler to measure the pieces of string to find out how long the perimeters were in cm.

Lunar Cycle

We have been learning about the lunar cycle. We looked at the different ways the moon appears to us and why this happens. We then used Oreos to recreate this pattern.

What's been happeningYear 5

We worked together in small groups to act out and describe the movement of the sun, earth and moon in relation to each other. One person was the sun, who stood in the middle, while they were orbited by a rotating earth. At the same time, the moon was orbiting and rotating the earth.

Water Resistance

We enjoyed conducting an investigation into water resistance. We created different shapes out of plasticine, dropped them into a funnel of water and timed how long they took to reach the bottom. We discovered that more streamlined shapes were quicker to reach the bottom. We also spent some time evaluating the investigation and discussing what improvements could be made.

Multiplying Numbers

We have been busy learning efficient written methods that we can use when multiplying numbers. We have looked at how we can use both an expanded and compact method to reach an answer. When working out on whiteboards, we have talked each step through with a partner making sure we explain the place value of each digit as we go.
