Solar System

Year 1 have loved making the planets from the solar system. We made the planets using papier-mâché and then painted the planets in groups. Look through our classroom window to see our amazing solar system!

Number Lines

Today in maths we explored using a number line to count forwards and backwards to 100. We discussed the interval lines on a number line and what they represent. We then had a go at drawing our own number lines on the playground using chalk!

Representing Numbers

We have been representing numbers within 50 using different pieces of equipment. We loved making the numbers out of: counters, tens frames, numicon, bead strings and dienes. We then partitioned the numbers into tens and ones using a whole-part model.

Anti-Bullying Week

The children in Year 1 have really impressed the adults with their amazing work in PSHCE as part of ‘Anti-Bullying Week’. To begin the week, we designed our own t-shirts and we focused on what makes us special. We have learnt that everybody is different and unique but we should always be kind to others. We then worked together to make a kindness paperchain, to represent how being kind can start a positive chain reaction. Towards the end of the week, we developed our collaboration skills by working as a team. We loved passing a hoop around the circle without talking. Well done Year 1.

Newspaper Reports

In English, Year 1 have been learning about newspaper reports. Today we have immersed ourselves in a range of newspaper reports! We looked at a variety of newspaper reports and noted how they were similar and how they were different. We then decided which newspaper report was our favourite and why. We can’t wait to learn more about newspaper reports so that we can write our own report at the end of the unit.

Planets

In Science, Year 1 have been learning about the planets in our solar system. We have learnt the planets names, their sizes and their colours. We used this knowledge to accurately colour in the planets before carefully cutting the planets out and sticking them in the correct order. Well done Year 1!

Maths

Today in maths, the children have been learning their number bonds to 10. We found number bonds to 10 by playing an alternative version of snap; when the children found two numbers that add together to 10 they had to shout out ‘bonds’.

PSHCE

The children in Year 1 have been thinking about the adults that we can trust when we are worried or upset. We started the lesson by discussing who we could trust and then we wrote the name or occupation of the person in each finger of our hand. We thought of the following adults: parents, family, teachers, police and doctors.

Partitioning Numbers

We have been learning about the addition and equals symbols in maths and using part – whole models and bar models to partition numbers up to 10. We have had a few practical lessons in maths to help our learning which we have all enjoyed.

DT

Y1 completed their first DT unit. We had to design a moving vehicle to help Traction Man escape from the shark scissors! We discussed which recycled materials we could use to make our cars and we planned our design. Next we made our cars and attached wheels to an axle so that our cars could move. Finally, we evaluated our work; we wrote about what we liked and what we could improve. Well done Year One!

History

In history, Year One have been learning about toys from the past. We explored a range of toys including a Jacob’s ladder and a spinning top. We played with the toys and wrote a bank of adjectives to describe each toy. We also made cross-curricular links with our science learning and thought about what materials the toys were made from.

What's been happeningYear 1

Whole Part Model

This week, we have been learning about the whole part model. We selected a number card (our whole) and then partitioned the correct number of cubes into two different parts. We tried to see if we could think of more than one way to partition each number.

What's been happeningYear 1

Comparing Numbers

We have been busy comparing numbers in maths. We have learnt to recognize the less than (<), greater than (>) and equal to (=) sign. We then used these symbols to correctly compare different sets of objects.

What's been happeningYear 1

Maths

We have been comparing different objects based on their length and weight. We used balance scales to measure which objects were heavier and which objects were lighter. This will build the foundation of our knowledge when we begin to compare numbers.

7 Habits

Year One have been learning about the ‘7 Habits’ as part of our ‘Leader in Me’ lessons. We created a class tree to display the habits and painted our own leaves to put on the tree. We can’t wait for you to see our fabulous display.
