Understanding the World
In Reception, Geography is taught through our area of learning called ‘Understanding the World’. Over the year, the children have been learning about a range of places including Antarctica, and discussing what they might see if they went there. During our ‘Woodland Explorer’ sessions, children have enjoyed going into the forest school area and have engaged in a range of activities such as drawing maps. They have discussed man-made and natural features of the forest school area, and talked about materials that they could see. Back in the classroom, they have also been using globes, atlases and non-fiction books to learn more about the world around them.

DT
Reception children made houses for the three little pigs. They drew a design first and then made their houses in busy learning. We had a review at the end and children shared their work with their friends.

Freezing and Melting
In Owl Class, we have been talking about the changes in the weather now that it is winter and how that affects the world around us. The children have been having lots of fun exploring ice and talking about ‘freezing’ and ‘melting’. We froze a rubber glove full of water and talked about how we could make it melt using our hands, the sun and other things to warm us. The children spent a lot of time exploring how they could melt it themselves by pouring warm water on to ice cubes and breaking it up with different tools.

Penguins
In Reception, children have enjoyed learning the story of Blue Penguin. They have been thinking carefully about what penguins look like and how they survive in Antartica. Using junk modelling, children made their own penguins.

Woodland Explorers
This half term, Owls and Hedgehogs have been enjoying our ‘Woodland Explorer’ sessions each Monday! As we have been reading the story ‘Owl Babies’, in this week’s session, children have been busy making nests for the owls. They worked with their friends to gather items for their nests and then carefully built these.

Models
Reception have been demonstrating a range of skills in DT this term. The children have created different models out of recycled materials. These included the Eiffel Tower, a phone and a bag! Well done Reception.
