Year 2 Learning Examples

Year 2 have explored maps and how they help us navigate. Using compasses, we learnt how to find our way and designed our own detailed maps of Queen Emma, showcasing our understanding of direction and map symbols.

In English, we have been reading ‘The Dragon Machine’ by Helen Ward and have been inspired to design our very own dragon machines and explain how they help to guide the dragons safely home. We created some brilliant writing and Dragon Machine designs.

In DT, we have been learning about free standing structures and how they are built securely. We put this into practice and made our own structures made from Lego and Polydrons, seeing who could build the tallest structure.

In English, we read Jack and the Beanstalk and generated questions to interview the giant. We then took part in a hot-seating activity, where we pretended to be the giant and answer the questions.

This half term the children have been reading the book ‘The Dragon Machine’. The children have been thinking about what might be found on Dragon Land and had to add their own imaginative ideas to a blank map. Here is an example of Harry’s ideas and what he thinks might be found on Dragon Land.

Year 2 have started the new term by reading the book ‘Welcome.’ New characters are now appearing in the story. Below you can see a fantastic picture of a pig. Year 2 described their new characters with adjectives too. What a great start to the year!
